Can a dog recover from IVDD without surgery? If your dog has been diagnosed with IVDD but is still able to walk, non-surgical treatments may be able to help him recover. However, if the IVDD is severe and your dog has lost the ability to walk, urgent emergency treatment is required.

Surgery is considered the best and in some cases the only way to treat severe cases of IVDD in dogs. The goal of IVDD surgery is to remove the diseased intervertebral disk material in order to relieve the pressure on your dog’s spinal cord, restore normal blood flow, and prevent disc problems in the future.

For the majority of disc herniations in the neck, the disc material is removed by drilling a hole from underneath the disc (called a ventral slot). Surgery is successful in the majority of dogs with acute disc herniations (success rate of approximately 90 percent in dogs who still feel their toes).
